About Hanukkah

Hanukkah, the Jewish festival of lights, lasts eight nights. Families light one more candle on the menorah each night, remembering the rededication of the Temple in Jerusalem.

In 2026 it falls on a Friday; we add later years once their dates are published. Also in December 2026: National Cookie Day (4 Dec), International Cheetah Day (4 Dec) and Wildlife Conservation Day (4 Dec). From this page you can add it to your calendar, get an email before it, share the countdown, or show it full screen.

How we work out the date
It begins on the 25th of Kislev in the Hebrew calendar, at sundown, so its place in the Gregorian calendar moves each year.
Good to know
Jewish days begin at sundown, so the first candle is lit on the evening before the first full day.
