About International Literacy Day

International Literacy Day is one of the international days on the United Nations list. The UN uses these days to draw attention to an issue and to what people around the world are doing about it.

In 2027 it falls on a Wednesday; in 2028 it’s on Friday 8 September, and in 2029 on Saturday 8 September. Also in September 2027: International Day of Clean Air for Blue Skies (7 Sep), Brazilian Independence Day (7 Sep) and Navy Day (Pakistan) (8 Sep). From this page you can add it to your calendar, get an email before it, share the countdown, or show it full screen.

How we work out the date
It’s on 8 September every year, as set by the United Nations.
