About Orionid meteor shower

The Orionids are a meteor shower made of dust left by Halley’s Comet. At the peak you might see around 20 meteors an hour under a dark sky.

In 2026 it falls on a Wednesday; we add later years once their dates are published. Also in October 2026: National Reptile Awareness Day (21 Oct), World Earthworm Day (21 Oct) and Navy Day (United Kingdom) (21 Oct). From this page you can add it to your calendar, get an email before it, share the countdown, or show it full screen.

How we work out the date
The peak comes around 21 October each year; the shower runs from early October to early November.
Good to know
Moonlight and city lights hide fainter meteors.
