About Gwangbokjeol

Gwangbokjeol is the national day of South Korea. It marks liberation from Japanese rule in 1945.

In 2027 it falls on a Sunday; in 2028 it’s on Tuesday 15 August, and in 2029 on Wednesday 15 August. This time it falls at the weekend; some countries move the day off to a weekday when that happens. Also in August 2027: Independence Day (India) (15 Aug), Assumption Day (15 Aug) and National Lemon Meringue Pie Day (15 Aug). From this page you can add it to your calendar, get an email before it, share the countdown, or show it full screen.

How we work out the date
